This area of the Escambia is on the very western edge of
the American Yellow Bolete range. It likely would not be found
west of the Tensaw Delta, but is well known in south-central
Alabama, central Florida and along the eastern seaboard.
The American Yellow Bolete is a large mushroom, its cap
usually measuring 4-8 inches broad. The stalk is 1-4 inches.
The cap is bright yellow, with patches of buff to brown. The
underside tube openings are dull yellow and bruises brown. The
stem is dull yellow and often seen with red-brown dots. Its preferred
habitat is under conifers and usually seen clinging to red clay
embankments. |
