Plant is an upright, smooth perennial with a fleshy root from which new growth emerges (rhizome). Preferred habitat is savannas and moist ditches. Distribution is coastal in the Escambia region. Leaves are alternate on the stem; consisting of one whole part; no leaf stalk; grass-like and has no teeth or lobes. Flower is a solitary head on a leafless stalk; symmetrical in shape. Disc flowers are bisexual; yellow; ray flowers are rarely white (more often pink beneath and white on top). Ray flowers (petals) are female. Flowers occur in the spring. Fruit is a seed which outer layer is fused to it. |
