The outer margin of the hindwing is scalloped. The pattern is variable. Typically, the color will be powdery white with black zig-zag lines across the wings. Two common forms exist: In form "dendraria" the median and sub-terminal lines are much broader than the other lines; in melanic form "carbonaria" the wings are mostly blackish, with variable white edging on parts of the lines.
