Fomes fomentarius Polyporaceae (Pore Fungi) Mushroom Family |
| To identify this mushroom look for a hoof-shaped cap 2-8 inches wide and a stem, if present (usually not) about 1/4 inch long. The cap is tough to brittle, red-yellow to brick red (paler with age), often with small flattened scales. The underside is white, with a rough texture like a honeycomb. The growth may be single or clustered. Its preferred habitat is dead three trunks, crevices in live oak or beech trees, or fallen logs of most broad-leaved trees. |
