Plant is an upright, smooth perennial. Preferred habitat is sandy pinelands and savannas. Distribution is throughout the Escambia region.

Flowers are in a flat-top cluster of heads at the end of the flowering stem; bisexual;
symmetrical in shape. Disc flowers are purple; no ray flowers. Flowering occurs in the summer.

Fruit is a seed in which the outer layer is fused to it (achene).
